Places to Visit on Your Florida Driving Holiday
There are many places to visit in Florida and the best way to get about is to drive. A fly drive holiday can be the best way to see the state. Florida is well known for the sunshine, oranges and Disney World, but there is so much more that the state can offer the intrepid tourist.
The area was bought by the United States from the Spanish in 1819 in a settlement of 5 million dollars. There have been many influences in the area and this comes through in the culture and architecture of the region.
The Florida State Fair is the best event to attend to sense the varying cultures in the state, both past and present. The fairgrounds are host to a cracker village; imitating the houses that were found in rural Florida in the 19th century. The fair also hosts an exhibition of counties, where each of the state’s Counties has a display and a representative to answer questions about the regions. The fair is an exuberant expression of everything that is Florida; animal displays, cheerleading competitions, and a large selection of rides and games.

For an introduction to the history of the state the Dry Tortugas National Park is a great introduction. The national park is the area that preserves Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas section of the Florida Keys. The park, which is mostly water, is famous for its abundant sea life, coral reefs and legends. The crowning jewel of the park is the isolated fortress; the island can only be reached by sea plane or boat. Building work on the fortress began in 1846. The three tiered six sided gun fort has a large grassed interior. When the building then became obsolete in 1888 it was handed over to the Marine Hospital Service to be operated as a quarantine station. In 1908 the area was turned into a bird refuge by Roosevelt. The fort offers tremendous views across the Gulf of Mexico and gives tourists great bird watching opportunities.
Another great place to visit is the Bok Tower Gardens, a botanical garden and bird sanctuary. The sanctuary was built by Edward W. Box and his wife, in 1921. There are several events held at the tower including Jazz concerts, orchestras and a demonstration of the carillon bells of the tower.
To see the wildlife of Florida you can visit a wildlife centre. The Manatee Observation and Education Centre offers the chance to see some of the most graceful creatures on the planet. The centre is a waterfront wildlife observation and nature education. All the wildlife you see at the centre is wild and the centre’s mission is to promote understanding and responsible actions for the fragile ecosystems of the Treasure Coast and their inhabitants.
