Isn’t too expensive is the problem. My daughter’s comps are in coliseum or civic centers, that are normally darkened, except for stage light and I have to get all the way in the back and zoom in to keep spectator heads out of my shots. I began using my kit 18-105 zoomed out that made me have an f/5.6. Shots were clear as a bell, but unusably dark.

I have a Nikon D7000 and bought a 70-200 f/2.8 to take these shots…haven’t yet as the next comp isn’t until Dec. I have to get the SS up to about 500-800 to freeze shots, so the ISO has to be up around 6400 and the lighting is so dirty/bad that I bet I can’t back that down to 3200. SO, others may disagree, but if you want good shots, with a little blur for motion or none to freeze them in air, you have to have a fast SS, and that means open your wallet for f/2.8 or better glass.
